UEFA Cup 2008-2009 The UEFA Cup began in 1971-72 season. This is the competition for some of the best European national championship clubs, international Cup holders and Intertoto Cup winners. The UEFA Cup is considered to be the second prestigious European club trophy. The UEFA Cup had changed its format a few times until it was modernized in 2004-05 season. After several qualifying play-off rounds 80 clubs meet in the first round for two matches at home and away, they determine 40 club teams which will compete in the group stage. The PrePoster reflects this tournament beginning from the group stage. The clubs here will be divided into 8 groups of 5 and will play round-robin with each other. 24 teams will qualify for the next round (the 3 best teams from each group), and they will be added by 8 teams which dropped out from UEFA Champions League. Before the finals the clubs will determine the winning pairs based on play-off at home and away. 2 teams surviving 1/16, 1/8, ¼ Finals and ½ Finals will meet for single match to be held at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey on May 20, 2009. Yet, the present format of the tournament is about to disappear. First the name, and then the system itself will be modified. For example, organizers want to replace one-round group system where rivals are not equal to an extent. From 2009-2010 the tournament will be named “UEFA Europa League”. Follow the results of the UEFA Cup matches and enter them in your PrePoster. The tournament match days are provided in the schedule. The schedule of the UEFA Cup 2008-2009 match days.
